Nikolaj Coster-Waldau said how shocked he was to see that a room full of executives on his new TV programme were all women, and how ‘happy’ he was to discover this.
This week, the Game of Thrones star’s new series The Last Thing He Told Me, a thriller starring Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice, premieres on Apple TV Plus.
The 52-year-old portrays Owen Michaels, a guy who inexplicably disappears out of nowhere, prompting his wife Hannah Michaels (Jennifer) and daughter Bailey (Angourie) to embark on a desperate search for him and answers to their doubts about his actual identity.
Nikolaj recently spoke with Metro.co.uk on what it was like to work on the project behind the scenes, which is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.
‘I had so much fun shooting this show. Great people in front and behind the camera. I’ve never worked with the folks at Hello Sunshine. I didn’t think about the fact that it’s clearly a female-led company and focused on female-led stories,’ he said.
‘I didn’t think about that and there was one day when I walked past the little executive video village, I just walked around and suddenly I caught myself, [realising]: “Oh, it was women sitting there, all the executives were women.”’
The fact that there were all female executives in the room’stood out’ to the Gods of Egypt star at the time.
‘I noticed because I noticed it, if you know what I mean? The fact that it stood out. Because I’d seen that situation where it was all men and never thought about it. I thought about it this time.’
He continued: ‘I remember going, “Oh good, I’m glad it’s happening.” My daughters – it’s a better world for them than it was 30 years ago. So that’s good.’
Nikolaj has been married to his wife, Nukâka Coster-Waldau, since 1998, and the pair has two kids together.
‘It turned out to be like jumping back in drama school and doing movement theatre together,’ he recalled, before looking back on some ‘uncomfortable’ experiences he had with intimate scenes earlier on in his career.
‘It was not around when I started out and I had so many very uncomfortable experiences. It’s the best thing to have,’ he stated.
The Last Thing He Told Me premieres on Friday April 14 on Apple TV Plus.
