The showrunner for Picard’s season 3 has hinted what fans may anticipate, promising a’satisfying ending’ for those who have followed the lead character’s tale since Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Today marks the debut of the programme, led by Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart), on Amazon Prime Video, as he embarks on an all-new, death-defying quest with old and new companions.
To the delight of Star Trek fans, several veteran performers are reprising their roles in the ensemble, including LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn as Worf, Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, and Brent Spiner as Lore.
During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, executive producer Terry Matalas, who’s served as showrunner since season two, claimed that the third excursion for Picard is ‘definitely a bit of a departure from what’s come before’.
He then went on to describe how closely it is related to Star Trek: The Next Generation, which initially ran on television from 1987 to 1994.
‘In a lot of ways it’s a final sort of Star Trek The Next Generation film, a 10-part movie. And it’s sort of a passing of the baton from the last generation to the next in so many ways,’ he shared.

‘So it’s probably the most emotional story, the most gratifying to see these characters where they are decades later, to see their families, to see how they’ve changed, to see how they’ve stayed the same. And put it against this canvas of this giant science fiction adventure that has an absolutely epic conclusion. It’s pretty thrilling.’
Terry went on to say that fans of these characters who have followed them when they first appeared in Next Generation would be in for a treat.
‘I think I can assure Star Trek: The Next Generation fans that it’s a satisfactory finish and that we didn’t leave anything on the table,’ he claimed.
Patrick has played Picard for over four decades, first in Next Generation and then in films such as Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis, as well as the TV show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Picard joins forces with his old buddy Captain Riker (Jonathan) in the third season of his namesake programme after he receives a distress call from Beverly Crushed (Gates), with whom he had a love relationship many years ago.
They realise that there’s a lot more going on in the galaxy, with terrible forces threatening their way of life, and an old foe reappears.
Picard is available to watch on Paramount Plus through Amazon Prime Video, with new episodes released on Fridays.
