When asked how he felt about shooting a fifth season of his popular sitcom Catastrophe, Rob Delaney didn’t mince words.
The 46-year-old Deadpool 2 actor developed and co-wrote the Channel 4 and Amazon programme with Bad Sisters actress Sharon Horgan, which aired from 2015 to 2019.
The comedy depicts Sharon (Horgan), a primary school teacher who has a one-night stand with American advertising boss Rob (Delaney) and chooses to retain the baby and marry him.
Catastrophe was a critical and financial success, earning a TV Bafta in 2016 and being nominated for best comedy series at the Emmys the same year.
But when questioned about another series on podcast Dish, the Tom & Jerry star said: ‘I hope we don’t, only because people reboot everything now. Let it be.
‘We stopped doing it because we had done four series that we were proud of and we could smell that we were getting in danger of repeating ourselves, and frankly, we said a lot about marriage and parenting in there, maybe Sharon might have some ideas. I totally don’t.’
Rob added he felt another season ‘might be bad, or worse, a cash grab” and he would ‘rather starve to death’.
He also said: ‘I don’t want my kids to starve to death, but I would totally on principle be like, check it out I starved to death ‘cause it was cooler than trot out some [rubbish].’
However, the comic is eager to work on another project with Pulling heroine Sharon, describing her as ‘hilariously funny and talented.’
Rob also discussed his time working with Tom Cruise, whom he met on the set of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, saying the A-lister was “so intensely involved in every aspect of the production” in a “different” manner than any other “big star.”
‘Oh, well, we should use this lens, that character in the background’s hair should be an eighth of an inch shorter, like, like a machine, you know?’ he explained. ‘You are extremely devoted.’
Rob is also expected to appear in the upcoming season of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian drama Black Mirror.
According to Deadline, Netflix is keeping his involvement in the blockbuster series under wraps, with other cast members rumoured to include House of Cards star Kate Mara and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul.
Catastrophe is available to stream on All4, while the first episode of season three of Dish is available from Wednesday.
