In season 2 of their TV series, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney return to the heart-warming city of Wrexham… This time, they get a royal guest in the form of King Charles himself.
Since the Hollywood celebrities won their bid to acquire the Welsh football team, the world has been watching with bated breath in what seemed like a real-life Ted Lasso story.
The first season of Welcome To Wrexham on Disney Plus was a huge success, with camera crews revealing what it’s really like behind the scenes for the co-owners, players, and fans who have loved the team their entire lives as the club strives to get promoted and reinvigorate the community with hope for the future.
In the second season’s new teaser, Deadpool star Ryan, 46, recounts how he and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob, 46, came together to buy Wrexham.
Rob describes how everything was going as planned… until Wrexham suffered a terrible semi-final defeat.
While the squad and its fans must deal with that loss, they now have a greater spotlight on them as a result of the millions of people across the world who have taken an interest in their narrative… which also means increased expectations and pressure.
Since they began investing their time and energy in Wrexham, the community has evolved in a ‘genuine, real, and strong’ way, according to Ryan.
Then something happens that looks to utterly blow Ryan and Rob’s socks off.
The Definitely, Maybe actress says to the camera, ‘So, the King of England called.’
The 74-year-old King then appears on film, going onto the pitch at The Racecourse stadium and shaking Ryan’s hand.
The king and Queen Camilla visited Wrexham in December last year, and Rob promised to make the royal couple “fans” of the club.
‘I would say that we’re unimaginably pleased to welcome him to the Racecourse Ground, this ancient church that lies in the heart of Wrexham and is the heart of Wrexham,’ Ryan said ahead of the royal visit.
âRob and I both said early on, and this holds true and for the rest of our lives, we will do anything to uplift and elevate this community and this club and having the King pay a visit is certainly one way to do it. Thatâs for sure. Very excited.â
Rob also added: âThis is an incoming call. So we hope that heâs a fan. If not, weâll make him a fan.â
In the new teaser for Welcome To Wrexham season two, the owners emphasise how crucial it is for the team to get promoted during this new season, as else it will be “totally and unwholly unsustainable.”
However, Ryan adds that the ‘responsibility’ isn’t only about getting promoted, but also about ‘never letting down this community’ that loves so profoundly about the club.
The film also includes images of the women’s Wrexham AFC squad battling against a rival team, while obviously emotional fans express their feelings towards the club.
In a powerful statement, Ryan states: âI look at Wrexham as the most special gift Iâve ever had in my life.â
We canât wait to watch what happens next!
Welcome To Wrexham season 2 premieres on Wednesday September 13 on Disney Plus in the UK.
