Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer who were hoping that Sarah Michelle Gellar would return to the role of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be disappointed.
That is, assuming the actress keeps her word that her days as Buffy Summers are over.
Sarah established herself as one of television’s greatest heroines from 1997 to 2003, while also repeating the adored character in the spin-off Angel between 1999 and 2000.
Despite the fact that Buffy ended 20 years ago, there is still a strong desire among fans for a revival, particularly one in which she makes a return.
However, the 45-year-old says she has no desire to be a part of a relaunch.
‘I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up,’ she said emphatically while speaking to SFX Magazine via IndieWire.
‘I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: “Every girl who has the power can have the power.” It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.’
Sarah noted that the story of Buffy was intimately related to her first appearance in her adolescence, which is why she wouldn’t be engaged in a revival.
‘But like I said, the metaphors of Buddy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent,’ she added.
While Sarah’s vampire-hunting days are over, she previously backed another acclaimed actress to fill Buffy’s shoes if a revival were to happen.
‘I vote Zendaya,’ she told author Evan Ross Katz last year, throwing her support behind the Spider-Man star.
Last summer, Buffy actor Tom Lenk opened up to Metro.co.uk about a heartwarming moment he shared with Sarah on set, when she demonstrated her support for him during a tricky situation.
Tom’s character Andrew Wells had a ‘big crime scene’ to do, which was swapped on the schedule at the last minute, so they ‘hadn’t worked on the lines’.
‘She stuck up for me. She said, “Hey, we’ll attempt this, but if he doesn’t feel comfortable, if I don’t feel comfortable, because you haven’t given us time to memorise our lines, then we’ll come back to it because it’s an important scene.” And I thought it was very cool,’ he recalled.
He highlighted that Sarah ‘really set the tone of how I want to treat other people when I’m working with them, describing it as a ‘cool moment’.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available to watch on Disney Plus.
