Annie Murphy, who starred in Schitt’s Creek, couldn’t contain her excitement when she realised Emily Hampshire would be appearing opposite Martin Compston in The Rig.
The Russian Doll actress, 36, plays socialite Alexis Rose opposite Emily’s sardonic motel owner Stevie Budd in the hit sitcom about a wealthy family whose lives is turned upside down when they lose almost everything.
While Dan Levy and his father Eugene Levy’s Schitt’s Creek has regretfully concluded, Emily, 41, has been hard at work on Amazon Prime‘s new fascinating sci-fi series, The Rig.
The story concerns a crew of oil workers stationed in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland who become effectively isolated and shut off from all contacts when a mysterious fog engulfs them.
Martin, 38, who rose to popularity as conscientious anti-corruption investigator Steve Arnott in Line of Duty, is among the Boy Meets Girl actor’s co-stars in the six-parter, which also stars Game of Thrones’ Iain Glen.
Emily has admitted that she had never seen the BBC’s blockbuster crime drama about weeding out corrupt cops, but Annie was supposedly overjoyed when she learned that the LOD star was also cast in The Rig.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Emily promised she would start Line of Duty ‘very soon’ after a glowing recommendation from the show’s mega-fan, Annie.
She continued: ‘I actually am because Annie Murphy who plays Alexis on shits Creek, when she found out I was working with Martin, she was like, “You’re working with Martin Compston from Line of Duty?”
‘She was going crazy over him. So I was like, I guess I have to watch it.’

Meanwhile, Martin, who had previously admitted he hadn’t watched Schitt’s Creek, said he has now begun the Canadian comedy, which became a sleeper hit during the pandemic.
‘I have started Schitt’s Creek,’ he said, before adding: ‘I mean, it was fascinating talk to you about it, but Schitt’s Creek seemed to really become a phenomenon during lockdown.’
Emily continued: ‘Yeah, I think it was a perfect storm of stuff. It also became a phenomenon when we were finished – like we’d been doing a series for six seasons that nobody was really watching.
‘And then lockdown happened and they were forced to watch it. But I do think it’s a show that requires binging in the way that you have to be introduced to this family and then you learn to love them.’
In The Rig, Emily stars as scientist and oil company rep Rose Manson, while Martin plays communication officer Fulmer Hamilton.
The Rig is available to stream on Prime Video.
