Serena Williams has spoken out in support of her good friends Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, defending them for forming their own family after being scapegoated.
After celebrating the beloved couple in part one of their Netflix documentary series, the legendary tennis player, appears in the second half of Harry & Meghan where she weighs in on their wedding and the aftermath.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stood down in 2019 before moving to America.
Siding with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to break away from the establishment, Serena says in the fourth episode: ‘They’re creating their own family, and friends can be family too.
‘They can start something fresh and new and hope that one day that family on both ends will be able to understand that this is truly love.’
Serena was a guest at Meghan and Harry’s wedding at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in May 2018.

The beautiful ceremony included a performance from Kingdom Choir, a gospel choir from London.
Addressing their choice to include the gospel group – something that had never previously been done at a royal wedding – Serena enthuses: ‘To have her culture represented at the wedding – amazing.
‘I loved it and I thought it was really courageous and breaking boundaries but not trying to.’
She was also among Meghan’s celebrity friends who threw the former Suits actress a surprise baby shower when she was pregnant with her first child, Archie, in 2019.
‘My girlfriends surprised me with a really beautiful baby shower in New York,’ Meghan recalls in the series.
‘They were like, “We’re going to shower her with love and her baby and she’s going to survive this, we’re going to get through it with her”.’
‘It was just so cool and so fun to try and have an intimate moment,’ Serena says of the wholesome getaway. ‘I don’t think I understood that there was no intimate moment that one could have.’
Harry & Meghan is available to stream on Netflix.
