Silent Witness stars Emilia Fox and David Caves are crossing their fingers that their on-screen romance will persist as the long-running BBC drama enters its 26th season.
The actors, who play Dr Nikki Alexander and Dr Jack Hodgson, appeared on The One Show on Monday night to talk about the couple’s future together and why their characters met in the first place.
Fans will recall how, after years of courting, Nikki and Jack ultimately spent the night together in Series 25.
Alex Jones, the show’s host, was intrigued by the couple’s relationship and inquired about its durability as soon as she sat down with them on the red sofa.
‘Isn’t it the great debate?’ Emilia responded, and David added, ‘Well, we hope so.’
‘I believe what we wanted to achieve with our tale was highlight how a friendship transitions into a partnership and how that impacts their interactions with one another,’ Emilia explained.

‘Also how the other characters within the Lyell Centre respond to them working together and loving each other.’
She went on to say: ‘As we saw in the first story, they are each other’s strengths but also they are each other’s vulnerability because they love each other so much so anything that happens to the other which isn’t good, the other one feels.’
‘It raises the stakes a lot,’ David agreed.
The third episode of the new series Silent Witness will air on Monday night.
Titled ‘Familiar Faces’ part one, the official synopsis reads: ‘An abandoned lorry is found at a quarry with several dead and dying people in the back.
‘Initially, it appears to be a classic sex trafficking story that Nikki and the police are all too familiar with, but it soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems.
‘With the survivors refusing to speak, Nikki and the team must use their pathological and forensic skills to identify the deceased and piece together what happened.’
The One Show airs week nights from 7pm on BBC One and Silent Witness airs Mondays at 9pm on BBC One.
