Fans of the original Squid Game have responded to reports that a David Fincher-directed US version may be in the works, and it’s safe to say that they aren’t happy.
A gang of desperate participants competed in lethal kid’s games in order to win a life-changing cash reward in the South Korean drama, which became one of the most popular Netflix series.
The dystopian series received multiple accolades after its debut, including 14 nominations for the most recent Emmy Awards, and the streamer has already announced plans for a second season.
According to recent rumours, Fight Club director David, 60, may be directing an English-language adaptation of Squid Game for American viewers.
The rumours initially arose on a podcast by Jeff Sneider, who contributes to the Hollywood insider publication The Ankler. Sneider stated that the movie was in development and that the director of Seven had responded “yes.”
However, Squid Game fans aren’t overjoyed about the idea of a US release; one said it sounded like a clear “quick cash grab” for Netflix.
‘I hope this is not true. We do NOT need another Squid Game remake and we need Fincher working on films,’ another remarked.
Others expressed their preference for Squid Game season 2 over an American adaption on social media.
David taking on the project, however, piqued the curiosity of several Squid Game watchers, with one calling the story “really interesting.”
Netflix launched a reality TV version of Squid Game over in the UK, but it has come under fire for allegedly using “inhumane” filming circumstances.
After hearing that several of the candidates needed medical assistance since they were filming in extremely cold conditions, the worldwide streaming service, however, refuted any claims of “serious injury.”
At the time, Netflix issued a statement in which it stated: “We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the necessary safety procedures.”
‘While it was very cold on set – and participants were prepared for that – any claims of serious injury are untrue.’
Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
