Gorka Márquez and his celebrity partner Nikita Kanda were booted off Strictly Come Dancing, and fans have noticed an unusual pattern.
The pro dancer and the TV and radio presenter were the second couple to be ousted from the ongoing series, prompting fans to do some investigating for rumours of a ‘Gorka curse’ to circulate.
Of course, everyone is aware of the infamous Strictly curse, but this prospective trend is unique to the dancer and speaks well for him in 2024.
‘The curse continues for Gorka he’s always either one of the first out or a finalist #Strictly,’ pointed out one fan on X, formerly know as Twitter. ‘It’s insane lmao’.
‘Wait… you’re right 😭,’ another person replied. ‘
Someone else was already prepared for the turn of events, writing before the show: ‘If Nikita is eliminated tonight, the Gorka curse will be real again. Tameka 14th, Alexandra 2nd, Katie 13th, Maisie 2nd, Katie 14th, Helen 2nd, Nikita 14th.’
The next year, he and singer Alexandra Burke finished as runners-up, but four weeks later, he and TV personality Katie Piper were fired.
He didn’t have a celebrity partner in 2019, but he returned to the final in 2020 with EastEnders actress Maisie Smith, but the following year he and Corrie’s Katie McGlynn just made it to week three.
He and Helen Skelton reached the grand final last year, and the ‘curse’ resumed this weekend as they were ousted as the second pair.
The judges decided overwhelmingly to rescue Love Island star Zara McDermott and her partner Graziano Di Prima in their second week of the dreaded dance off.
Gorka, 33, said how happy he was of Nikita’s progress in the competition, especially given her lack of prior dancing expertise.
‘I am beyond proud of her, for someone that doesn’t have any dance experience or performance experience to come on this show and dance in front of millions of people – for three weeks, I think it’s incredible,’ he said.
‘You should be very proud of yourself, you have never let me down and I am very proud of you. This show is going to teach you so many things about yourself that you can take with you and I take incredible memories. I’ve never laughed so much in three weeks than I did with you.’
Strictly Come Dancing returns next Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
