Susanna Reid was forced to withdraw from hosting Good Morning Britain after the National Television Awards 2023 due to voice loss.
In a last-minute change on Wednesday’s broadcast of the ITV news series, Charlotte Hawkins, 48, replaced Susanna, 52, alongside Ed Balls, 56.
Susanna had travelled to the GMB studios but opted not to appear at the last minute, instead speaking from her dressing room, explaining that she didn’t want to ‘inflict’ her voice on viewers for three hours.
The presenter stated her croaky voice was a surprise because she was the first one to depart and doesn’t drink or smoke.
Charlotte opened GMB by saying, ‘This is a bit of an impromptu appearance for me this morning.’
Ed added that he arrived at the ITV studio at his normal hour of 4.30am but didn’t see anything unusual when he passed past Susanna, who was getting ready in her dressing room in her white dressing gown.
Charlotte interjected: ‘You saw Susanna there but we couldn’t hear her.’
Ed agreed she was ‘croaky’ before approaching Susanna in her dressing room and asking how she was.
Cackling with laughter and sounding rather ill, Susanna replied: ‘I’m fine, I just can’t speak.’
Asked how she had lost her voice, a very croaky Susanna responded: ‘I don’t know. I don’t know if it was the heatwave inflaming my vocal cords?
‘It’s funny because it was the NTAs last night and when I got in my cab to leave the driver said, “You’re the very first person to leave the NTAs. You’re obviously not partying.”
‘And of course, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. So there’s absolutely no reason I can understand. But I’ve completely lost my voice.’
Susanna’s loss of voice was labelled ‘ironic’ by Charlotte, despite the fact that she is sober and left the NTAs early.
Susanna went on to apologise to viewers for being forced to skip GMB, saying: ‘Thank you Charlotte for stepping in. I did not want to inflict this on our wonderful viewers for a whole three hours.’

Good morning, Great Britain. Charlotte, Susanna, and Ed were not nominated for any awards at the NTAs, but still had a nice time at the lavish London celebration.
For the 22nd year in a row, Ant and Dec won the TV presenter award, while The Repair Shop won the daytime category.
Sarah Lancashire was the night’s biggest winner, taking home awards for special recognition, drama performance, and returning drama.
