The Last Leg will not air a new episode tonight on Channel 4 in the wake of the Queen’s death.
However, as various TV channels including the BBC and ITV alter their schedules to replace programmes with news specials, it’s yet to be revealed if Gogglebox will still launch its new season tonight.
On Thursday September 8, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II had died at the age of 96 at Balmoral, after concerns were raised about her health by doctors.
The BBC stopped its regular programming to air continued coverage of the historic day, with ITV also announcing changes to its schedule.
On Friday, hours before late-night comedy show The Last Leg was due to air, host Adam Hills released a statement on Twitter revealing they’d decided to cancel tonight’s episode.
‘We’ve decided not to do an episode of @thelastleg tonight. It just doesn’t feel right,’ he said.
‘We’ll pay tribute to Her Majesty next week but for now our thoughts are with her family, and all those affected by the news. We hope you understand.’
Despite the announcement, the Channel 4 schedule still says at the time of writing that The Last Leg is due to air at 10pm on the channel, following a new episode of Gogglebox at 9pm.
Several people praised Adam for the ‘respectful’ move of shelving The Last Leg until next week.
‘Totally understand. Shows how respectful you all are #ItsOk,’ one person tweeted in response.
‘Very respectful. Thank you guys,’ someone else said, while another wrote: ‘Totally understand / nice gesture.’
However, others weren’t as approving of the decision, expressing their belief that The Last Leg should still go ahead.
A significant TV event cancelled this week following the Queen’s death was the BBC Proms, including Last Night at the Proms, which was due to take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Saturday evening.
Some people have called for the Proms to still go ahead, stating that they think it would be an ‘apt’ way of honouring the late monarch’s life.
