The Lord of the Rings star Miranda Otto thinks it might be strange for her to watch The Rings of Power

Miranda Otto may have been a part of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but she is yet to see the prequel series The Rings of Power.

The Australian actress gained to prominence in the early 2000s for her portrayal as Éowyn in Peter Jackson’s film series, a role she first appeared in in the second film, The Two Towers.

Just over two decades after the publishing of The Fellowship of the Ring, Amazon published a TV series based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s writings, which rapidly became a major hit with fans.

Miranda, 55, has confessed that, despite her ties to the plot, she has yet to see the show.

‘I haven’t watched Rings of Power but I will get around to it at some stage,’ she said.

‘It’s a funny thing for me because the experience for me was so special that it kind of sits contained for me in that moment.

‘I wish every success, but in some ways my, it would be funny for me to go back and try and watch it or watch others.’

Miranda, on the other hand, remains connected to Lord of the Rings and is presently working on the animated feature The War of the Rohirrim, which will be released next year.

She reprises her role and narrates the film.

When the opportunity arose, she jumped at it.

‘Phillippa (Boyens), one of the writers on the original, rang me and asked if I would be interested in coming back and narrating the animation for this film and I said yes because I thought it would be interesting to return to the character,’ she said.

‘There is not an enormous amount I have to do but it was a fun way to keep the character going in some way so many years later.’

Miranda explained that there is some back and forth with this specific position as the animation process continues, saying she had completed the first recordings so far and planned to do more in the following six to twelve months.

While she didn’t have to spend hours getting her hair and make-up done to turn into the noblewoman this time, there was one aspect of the persona she had to think about two decades later.

‘It’s been fun to go back and find the voice again and try to think of the character older and see if it is similar enough to my voice back then,’ she explained.

Miranda will first appear in The Clearing before that.

The eight-part psychological thriller, based on J.P. Pomare’s novel In the Clearing, was inspired by the tragic narrative of a real-life Australian cult featuring a female leader, Adrienne, who Miranda portrays.

‘I think in the beginning we do set her up as “who is this woman and how and why does she have this power”, because it is quite unusual to have a woman heading up a cult, it’s often men,’ she explained.

While she first assumed that the key objectives for her character would be to gain and hold power, this proved to be incorrect.

‘It ended up to me she was more trying to fulfill a part of her childhood and life that she never had, and so she was someone who is actually building this sort of group of people around her to make a family and community for herself that she never had,’ she said.

The story follows the dreams of a cult and a lady compelled to confront demons from her past in order to prevent the future kidnapping and coercion of innocent children.

Teresa Palmer and Guy Pearce also appear in the series.

The Clearing is streaming from May 24 on Disney Plus.
