As hip hop great Grandmaster Flash was revealed as Polar Bear during Wednesday night’s blockbuster episode, The Masked Singer has exceeded themselves.
The most recent show was a New York Night-themed programme in which one of music’s genuine trailblazers was disguised as a polar bear, clad in a red baseball hat and sporting some rather jazzy gold chains, singing and dancing to Blondie’s Rapture.
Flash, 65, ripped off his gigantic head piece a fortnight after Mary Poppins hero Dick Van Dyke, 97, was exposed, leaving the crowd and judges startled – save for Nicole Scherzinger, who correctly guessed his identity earlier in the night.
‘We are in the presence of an icon,’ exclaimed host Nick Cannon, 42. ‘You are a pioneer of a whole culture. Why did you want to do this show?’
‘In the world today, there is a lot of sadness,’ explained the superstar. ‘When I seen this show on a rough day I had for business, I was laughing, actually had me laughing and it allowed you to let your guard down and just have fun.
‘It’s a great show.’
Nicole told the crowd: ‘We’re looking at the man that invented scratching.’
‘And your energy is so infectious. That’s what it’s all about. You spreading the real message, just like your song.’
The entire audience erupted as Grandmaster Flash was met with a pair of DJ decks and began scratching to Chic’s song Good Times.
While Nicole claimed to be the only judge to figure out who was behind the mask, Ken Jeong, 53, picked P Diddy, Jenny McCarthy guessed Flava Flav, and Robin Thicke was certain it was LL Cool J.
Medusa narrowly lost a sing-off against the five-piece ensemble California Roll on The Masked Singer.
Nicole saved her, revealing that the singer was her ‘favourite’ and ringing her ‘Ding Dong Keep It On’ Bell.
The judges were split on who she was, with Jenny believing it was Halsey and Nicole certain it was Lorde.
Fans at home, on the other hand, have guessed that Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie would be hiding behind the mask.
The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays on FOX.
