Fawn’s character in The Masked Singer UK wasn’t planned to appear the way it does now because the design had to be altered significantly to fit the celebrity’s body.
Tonight, six contestants from the ITV competition’s 2023 series will tread the stage one more, with Fawn, Jacket Potato, Pigeon, Rhino, and Rubbish battling for the chance to stay another week and keep their identities hidden.
In week two, Fawn stunned judges Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora, and Jonathan Ross with their rendition of Beauty and the Beast from the 1991 animated classic, prompting many to speculate that the mask could be worn by Spice Girl Emma Bunton or former X Factor star Stacey Solomon.
During a recent interview, costume designer Tim Simpson, managing director of Plunge Creations, highlighted the numerous alterations the character through during the creation process.
‘I would say Fawn went through a lot of changes. I basically conceived Fawn in a totally different outfit,’ he revealed.
‘It was going to be in a different set of trousers, and then the trousers changed, and then it went to a skirt, and then it went to a tight jacket. It just went through lots of iterations, because I designed it for a different body shape.’
Tim explained that after they knew who would be playing Fawn, they had to rethink the outfit to figure out how to make it fit their body shape while also being practical from a performance standpoint.
‘Once we knew who the performer was, it was a matter of actually re-looking at it and thinking, is that form going to suit them? And is that going to actually get the best performance out of them?’ he recalled.
‘It was then quite a process between us and the producers and performers saying, “What are you going to feel most comfortable in?” Often we don’t have to do that.’
He added: ‘With Fawn, it’s quite delicate. It needs to feel delicate. It needed to sit nicely and hang nicely on the performer. I think Fawn was a particular one that went through a lot of changes.’
The artist stated in the first hints package about Fawn, ‘You would believe a fawn is a young deer, but I’m surely not a baby.’
They also mentioned math as a “passion” of theirs… So, might the hints be pointing to Countdown’s math prodigy Rachel Riley? Let’s see what clues come to light tonight!
The Masked Singer UK returns Saturday Night at 7pm on ITV and ITVX.
