The costume designer for The Masked Singer UK has announced that Knitting is the heaviest costume this year – and boy, does Knitting weigh a lot.
The ensembles worn by the celebs have continued to wow fans at home, as well as host Joel Dommett and judges Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora, and Jonathan Ross, over the past four series of the ITV competition.
Some are more comfortable to wear than others… This year, with candidates such as Phoenix, Jellyfish, and Rhino, it turns out that the character designed to resemble a ball of wool may be the most stressful for whatever the renowned individual is beneath.
During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, costume designer Tim Simpson from Plunge Creations revealed how tough it is to wear Knitting, which weighs an amazing 20kg.
‘It’s probably around 20 kilogrammes. ‘It’s a hefty thing,’ he admitted. ‘I believe knitting was the most difficult.’
Furthermore, ‘just shy of 350 metres’ of wool was required to create the garment.

A football pitch, by comparison, is normally 100 metres long. That’s a lot of wool!
Knitting is such an absurd costume that it seems fitting that the concept came about as a random lighting moment in the middle of a costume… That’s exactly what occurred.
‘Knitting was a casual suggestion by my partner Sarah – business partner and life partner. I think it was over a glass of wine, she said, “Why don’t we do a Knitting?” I was like, “What do you mean, a Knitting, just a bundle of wool?”’ Tim recollected.
‘I sort of sat down and doodled something up and went, “What, like this?” and she went, “Yep, go on, send it off.” So I then sent off that sketch to the producers, and I think Knitting’s fabulous. It’s really heavy.’
Tim went on to explain how Knitting was made: ‘So the whole outfit is hand-knitted by a woman who knits with her arms instead of knitting needles since it’s so large. Because there’s so much wool in it, it’s just a tremendously heavy outfit.
‘I like that it doesn’t have any eyes. Because it is so huge, cartoony, and simplistic, it makes all the other outfits appear fiddly. I enjoy knitting, and I think the costume is fantastic.’
Rubbish, on the other hand, is a difficult outfit for the performer to wear, which may surprise audiences.

‘I think weirdly Rubbish was a hard one to wear, simply because you had to be able to crouch down into it and disappear and turn into a rubbish bin, and there’s not much space in there,’ the costume designer stated.
‘You’ve got a bin lid resting on your head, which is not what anybody wants, really, while they’re while they’re performing.’
The Masked Singer UK returns tonight at 7pm on ITV and ITVX.
