The cast of Mean Girls has reunited to remind us of the cult classic’s potency, but not for a new film.
Tina Fey’s 2004 American teen comedy followed Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), a student who moved from Africa to the United States and began her new school year as an outcast until she met popular girl group, the Plastics, and became engrossed in her newfound social status.
Lindsay, 37, was recently photographed with her former co-stars Amanda Seyfried, 37, and Lacey Chabert, 41, as they worked on a secret project inspired by the film.
Everything has now been disclosed, and the reunion was for a Walmart Black Friday advertising.
The commercial depicts a new generation of It girls who rule the halls of North Shore High School, one of them is Lacey’s character, proud ‘cool mother’ Gretchen Wieners.
As the ad begins, with a voice over provided by Cady sharing that at the school ‘some things never change’, the new teenage trio strut out of their high school where they’re greeted by Gretchen, who alerts her daughter Amber and her friends to get in her car because they’re heading ‘deal shopping’.
But, as Cady explains to the audience, ‘now we shop Walmart Black Friday deals’ rather than designer goods.
While the rest of the party is driving away, Karen Smith (Amanda) has apparently utilised her ‘psychic boob’ powers to carve herself a profession as a weather lady, warning viewers that there is a ‘30% possibility it’s already Wednesday’.
The video then switches to former Mathletes captain Kevin Gnapoor (Rajiv Surendra) sitting in his living room, telling his little son to ‘not let the haters stop you from doing your thing’.
Cady is now a guidance counsellor at her previous school, but her prior social position isn’t appreciated by the pupils, who aren’t thrilled when she tries to sneak the term ‘grool’ into conversation (to the uninitiated, it’s a blend of wonderful and cool).
Gretchen, who has taken the role of previous Queen Bee Regina George’s mother, is also a proud TikTok stage parent, setting up a ring lamp in her living room for the adolescent females to appear their best on TV.
But when she tries to use a word from the original film – fetch – she is informed it’s “not going to happen.”
Years after the student cohort was warned not to have sex because they would ‘die’ if they did, things are a little more relaxed today, with a talk about the benefits of being a Walmart member being delivered to them.
‘The deals were coming out of us like word vomit,’ the voice-over said, as students reproduced a scene from the film by expressing their appreciation for Walmart rather than Regina.
After that, one pupil told how she was encouraged to buy AirPods and Lego after witnessing ‘Ms Heron pick them up in the sales’.
The three ladies then take their seats for the Winter Talent Show, while Cady’s erstwhile bestie Damian (Michael Franzese) is spotted in the wings handling the lights.
Gretchen encourages the teenagers as she rushes into the aisle to videotape them doing a performance to Jingle Bell Rock.
However, when the enthusiasm over the shopping discounts grows, the entire school swings into turmoil.
Speaking on set during the filming of the ad, Lindsay said it was ‘so nice being back together after all these years’.
‘It was great catching up with everyone,’ she told People.
Meanwhile Lacey added they’d had ‘so much fun getting to reminisce and be together again.’
