It’s a sad time for devoted The Walking Dead fans everywhere as the season 11 finale drew to a close.
The final episode, which was titled ‘Rest in Peace’ premiered on Sunday, however viewers have got an exciting spin-off to look forward to featuring the likes of the OG cast including Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan).
Nonetheless, TWD fans have come out in their droves to express their sadness over the end of the groundbreaking series, which follows a group of survivors in the midst of a zombie apocalypse.
One person tweeted: ‘Even though the Walking Dead main series is over. I’m glad they did right with how it ended, they knew who people wanted to see and they delivered.’
Another echoed: ‘What an amazing, emotional, and surprising way to end the series! Sure, it’s not the perfect ending I was hoping for, but it’s as close as it can get! Thank you @WalkingDead_AMC for entertaining me for over 12 years! And looking forward to more spin-offs.’
A third person added: ‘Honestly if they just gave us the last 10 minutes that would have been enough. I’ll admit I got teary eyed at the montage of all the characters over the years.’
The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang also shared a special message to loyal viewers who have tuned in since 2010 when the series first launched.
When asked what her message would be to those who have demonstrated their loyalty to the programme over the years, Angela said: ‘My message is, thank you for coming along on the journey – I’m going to try not to cry.’
‘We talk a lot behind the scenes about how much the fans of this show have just touched our hearts and meant a lot to us, and I just want to say thank you,’ she added.
‘Thank you for sticking with us and making us part of your lives, like every Sunday for years, and for creating the community that gives a lot of people support, because I know a lot of people have found friends through this show that they wouldn’t have made otherwise.
‘It’s intensely touching. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.’
Although fans would love nothing more, the likelihood of a 12th season of The Walking Dead is pretty slim at the present moment in time, with no plans announced to revive the show once it reaches its conclusion. No renewal has been announced by its network AMC.
Moving forward, a spin-off series following Rick and Michonne will premiere in 2023 alongside an untitled spin-off focusing on Daryl which will move the Walking Dead story to Europe.
The Walking Dead is available to watch on Disney Plus.
