The section opened with discussing the killing of Elianne Andam, a 15-year-old student who was tragically stabbed while purportedly attempting to shield a friend from her knife-wielding ex-boyfriend.
She is claimed to have tried to stop the youngster from hitting her friend on the bus after he attempted to offer her flowers and a love letter.
Gyles characterised the horrifying episode as ‘heartbreaking.’
‘This rise of knife crime is so distressing, but here we are reminded of how it has hurt, well, broken this family,’ he said.
He added that it is ‘so cruel’, while Vanessa described it as an ‘agonising story’.
Dermot and Alison continued their chat concerning the cutting down of the renowned Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland.
A youngster is now in arrest in connection with the disappearance of the tree, which was made famous in Kevin Costner’s 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Dermot said: ‘It seems kind of glib to move on to this story, but it’s dominating the news so I guess we should talk about it.
‘In a completely different way, it’s a sad story.
‘A tree has been cut down, a 300-year-old tree…’
Julia, a self-described “tree hugger,” then appeared on film to express her regret over what had occurred.
She said: ‘I know that there’s a lot of bad news around today, but this is absolutely a tragedy for the area, for the country, and just for the world it is such a sad indication of where we’ve come to.’
‘I’m a tree hugger, I’m a tree lover, and I care passionately that we are all very, very disconnected from nature now.’
Reacting to the transition, some were furious at the show for ‘comparing’ the stabbing to the tree.
‘So a 16 year old chopped down a tree and #ThisMorning are comparing it to a stabbing?’, one person tweeted.
‘I think they maybe should have bridged those two news items better’, penned another.
‘You cant go from talking about a teenager being killed by another teenager, to then calling the cut down of a tree a great tragedy.’
‘Is it me or did this morning just compare the killing of Elianne and the cut down of a tree!?!?’, another asked.
In the latest developments, a 17-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder Elianne.
