*Warning: This article contains huge spoilers for the Top Boy finale.
Top Boy’s most dramatic ending since The Sopranos left viewers wondering – but fans were almost given a solution to one nagging question: Who killed Sully?
Sully (Kane Robinson) was approached by Stefan (Araloyin Oshunremi) in the last seconds of the final episode, holding a gun at him, tempted to get revenge for the murder of his brother Jamie (Michael Ward).
Stefan immediately concluded that killing Sully wasn’t worth risking his own life for, and he fled.
Sully went to his car, sighing with relief – until someone else strolled by and finished the deed, dashing past his window and shooting him in broad sight.
Even if they had a hypothesis, Top Boy admirers were still stunned by the mystery killer.
Director William Stefan Smith has disclosed that an alternate ending was shot that would explain who murdered Sully.
‘The first way we shot the ending, we revealed the killer. That’s what was on the page,’ he told Still Watching Netflix.
‘But then we had one more take and I was like “let’s do one where we don’t see the killer”.
‘We put that in the cut, gave it to Netflix [and] the execs, Ashley [Walters] and Kane saw it and I think everyone agreed it was just stronger.
‘The idea of not showing the killer, for me, was [that] it could be anyone because Sully is a person that has so many enemies.’
He continued: ‘The idea that one of these enemies came and shot him, for me, demonstrates what life can be like on the roads.
‘I can understand some people want to know who killed Sully, but I won’t be the one to tell you.’
Top Boy is available to stream on Netflix now.
