It has been 21 years since the Twin Towers were struck by two planes in an atrocious attack, on September 11, 2001.
The terror attack on the World Trade Center sent shockwaves around the world, and remains one of the worst incidents in history, with thousands of lives lost.
There have been many documentaries throughout the years detailing the ordeal and the aftermath, with Netflix recently releasing Turning Point, and acclaimed programmes on BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in the UK.
Here are some of the best documentaries and explorations of 9/11 and the consequences.
Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror – Netflix
Netflix has just dropped a new five-part series focusing on the attacks, and the war on terror.
In hour-long instalments, filmmakers explore Al Qaeda’s roots and how the US was impacted by 9/11, and included interviews with survivors, soldiers, former CIA members and Taliban commanders.
They also spoke to Afghan civilians, with many sharing their stories for the first time.
9/11: One Day in America – National Geographic/
National Geographic made One Day In America in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and showed survivors and first responders speaking out about their experiences in a six-part miniseries.
The programmes offered a comprehensive account of the tragic day with archival footage, and new interviews with those impacted, almost 20 years on from the ordeal.

NYC Epicenters: 9/11 → 2021 ½ – HBO
Spike Lee has explored New York’s history and the impact of 9/11 on the city in NYC Epicentres: 9/11 → 2021 ½, using testimonies from those who lived through it, as well as footage of Dr Anthony Fauci, Rosie Perez, Chuck Schumer, Bill De Blasio and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The Oscar-winner’s documentary has been praised by many for its portrayal of how locals rebuilt and rebounded from what happened.
It can be found on HBO in the US.
9/11: Life Under Attack – ITV
A 90-minute documentary on ITV revisited the day that changed the world, with previously unseen footage capturing the chaos.
Viewers were presented with troubling phone recordings, public broadcasts and more helping to piece together a day that we will never forget, giving us a raw, unsettling look back at September 11.

Surviving 9/11 – BBC Two
BBC Two’s glimpse into the terror attack shared the accounts of 13 ordinary people who were caught up in the attacks.
The moving 90-minute instalment solely focused on interviewees who discussed their own recollections of that fateful day, as well as the sorrow, anger and devastation they are still working through decades later.

Children of 9/11: Our Story – All4
Channel 4 aired Children of 9/11: Our Story in August, to mark the anniversary of the World Trade Center being brought down.
The intimate film followed the lives of six young people whose dads died in the attacks, before they got the chance to meet – and is made up of video footage of their parents, and their own self-made diaries.
