Celebrity MasterChef returned to screens with an amazing line-up and plenty of surprises, so the starry-eyed chefs are suited up and ready to go.
With Jamelia, Dani Dyer, Dave Benson-Phillips, Mica Ven, and Sam Fox among the judges, the heat in the kitchen has been off the charts – and the programme is just in its third round of competition.
Wynne Evans, an opera singer and Go Compare advert star, was also aiming to impress judges and culinary experts John Torode and Gregg Wallace.
The 51-year-old Welsh celebrity rose to prominence as the face of the price comparison website’s fictitious character Gio Compario and appeared in the third heat of the BBC culinary show.
Before he makes his MasterChef debut, here’s everything you need to know about the operatic star with the twirly moustache.
Who is Wynne Evans?
Wynne rose to prominence in the Go Compare advertisements in 2009, donning a tuxedo and sporting an outrageous moustache while belting out the catchy melody.
The Welsh opera singer, maybe Britain’s most well-known face, played the flamboyant Gio Compario and then began appearing in television commercials as himself.
Wynne spent hours training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera studio before accepting the contract that would change his life forever. He eventually became a principal at the Welsh National Opera.
He disclosed a startling link to Gary Lineker, having voiced one of the retired footballer’s iconic Walkers crisps commercials back in the day.
Is Wynne Evans an opera singer in real life?
Yes, the answer is brief and to the point.
Wynne claimed he was hesitant to agree to portraying the singing figure in the popular TV advertisements because he was a professional opera singer and afraid that Go Compare would tarnish his reputation.
He shared: ‘I said, “No, I don’t wanna be in the ad, I’m a principal at the Royal Opera House. I’m a very serious singer”’ when asked to front the campaign all those years ago.
Wynne added that he continued to sing with the opera house until 2016, when he shifted his concentration to hosting his show on BBC Radio Wales.
The aspiring chef claimed that he stopped singing after 25 years of doing so and performing anywhere he wanted to sing.
When is Wynne Evans on Celebrity MasterChef?
Wynne will be on the BBC culinary programme for the third week of the 2023 season on Wednesday, August 16 at 9 p.m.
He prepared his greatest dishes with Sam Fox, DJ Locksmith from Rudimental, Jamelia, and Cheryl Hole from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.
Celebrity MasterChef continues tonight on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm.
