His Dark Materials has taken readers of Sir Philip Pullman’s book trilogy into a live-action rendition of his remarkable novel for the past four years.
The last episode of season 3 airs tonight on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, starring Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson as Lyra and Will, respectively.
Lyra’s father, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), has waged war against the oppressive Authority, and her mother, Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson), has done everything she can to protect her daughter at any cost.
While Sir Philip’s His Dark Materials series is comprised of three novels, many fans may be wondering if Lyra’s narrative will be continued in any manner in the future.
So, is it a possibility?
Will there be season 4 of His Dark Materials?
Unfortunately, like the novels in the His Dark Materials trilogy, season three is the series’ final instalment, thus there will be no season four.
Each season was based on one of the series’ three books: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.
However, Sir Philip, being the gifted writer that he is, has generated more content linked to the world, raising the prospect that the TV adaptation of his universe will be expanded in the future.
At least, that’s what we’re hoping for.
What other books are there in the series?
Sir Philip has written numerous more works related to His Dark Materials, including Lyra’s Oxford, a novella set two years after the events of The Amber Spyglass.
Once Upon a Time in the North is another novella created by the author that follows aeronaut Lee Scoresby in his earlier years, before he met Lyra.

With Lee portrayed in the TV programme by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, we can assume with near confidence that fans would love to see more of him if the opportunity occurred.
Sir Philip also created an audiobook of a short narrative called The Collectors, which depicts the story of Mrs Coulter’s early days at Oxford college.
The author is presently working on a new trilogy called The Book of Dust, with the first book in the series, La Belle Sauvage, showing Lyra as an infant.
The Secret Commonwealth, the second novel in the trilogy, follows Lyra when she is 20 years old, and a third instalment is now in the works.
Sir Philip also published a novella called Serpentine in 2020, which takes place after the events of The Secret Commonwealth with Lyra, and a book called Imagination Chamber: Cosmic Rays from Lyra’s Universe last year, which contains scenes from both the His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust trilogies.
His Dark Materials is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
