Suranne Jones and Eve Best star in the new ITV drama series Maryland, which premieres on Monday night (May 22) at 9 p.m.
Jones, 44, from Coronation Street and Unforgiven, and Best, 51, from House of the Dragon, are estranged sisters who reunite following their mother’s death.
While attempting to return their mother’s remains to their homeland, the siblings discover secrets about her that they were ignorant of while she was alive.
Jones devised the three-part drama, and she also acts as executive producer — her first producer post since the historical drama Gentleman Jack.
George Costigan (Happy Valley), Dean Lennox Kelly (Shameless), and American actress Stockhard Channing (The West Wing) all join the cast.
But where exactly is Maryland set, and where was it shot?
Where was Maryland filmed?
Maryland, while being set mostly on the Isle of Man, was actually shot in Ireland, with several Irish sites serving as stand-ins for Manx towns and villages.
Anne-Marie O’Connor, the show’s co-creator, stated that she found inspiration for Maryland’s filming sites while living in Ireland.
Per Radio Times: ‘I lived in Ireland for a time. I went to university in Galway for a year, all my family are from Tipperary. My writing career started there.’
‘I’ve got such a kinship with Ireland, and I go there all the time. All the family are there,’ she explained.
However, O’Connor admitted she had another location in mind: ‘I was really disappointed not to use the Isle of Man. There’s a real specificity to the island.’
