On the day that he would have turned 60, tributes to Sean Lock have flooded in.
The beloved comedian passed away from lung cancer in August 2021 at the age of 58, according to his family.
Off The Kerb Productions issued the following statement at the time: “It is with tremendous regret that we must announce Sean Lock’s passing. With his family by his side, he passed away from cancer at home.
‘Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy. Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children.
‘Sean will be sorely missed by all that knew him. We kindly request that the privacy of his family and children is respected at this difficult time.’
Over the years, Lock’s stand-up performances and appearances on different TV panel programmes, including 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Have I Got News for You, and QI, have given fans many chuckles.
He received the British Comedy Awards’ best live comedy honour in 2000.
He was also good friends with many other comedians, such as James Corden, Alan Carr, Jimmy Carr, and Jon Richardson. He was well renowned for his witty one-liners, sarcastic rants, and caustic banter.
Channel 4 created a video tribute to Lock in honour of his upcoming birthday, including all of his greatest performances.
Sean Lock would have been 60 today, but the broadcaster tweeted, “We’re not going to be maudlin about it.”
‘Instead we present this compilation of grumpy old man rants and anecdotes that demonstrate that Sean was, in many ways, always a 60-year-old man.
‘Happy birthday to you, sir.’
Fans were also eager to pay tribute to their beloved comedian, stating they’miss him every day’ and replaying his humorous scenes in remembrance.
‘Comic genius – god rest his soul’, tweeted one person.
‘What an amazingly funny and sweet man he was’, another wrote.
‘Forever an absolute legend, the top of his game’, another praised.
‘Remembering the sensational comedy legend Sean Lock, on what should have been his 60th birthday. Hugely, hugely missed,’ tweeted the British Comedy Society.
At the National comic Awards in February, 8 Out of 10 Cats won the prize for best comic panel programme, demonstrating that Lock’s humour is still appreciated even after his passing.
Following their triumph, Lock’s co-star and longtime buddy Richardson thanked the supporters on Twitter for their votes.
‘Massive thanks to everyone who voted for Cats Does Countdown at the Comedy Awards,’ the 40-year-old wrote.
‘That one is for Sean, without whom the show would have had a fraction of the comedy it had and much more maths.’
Lock became a regular team captain on the Channel 4 show in 2005.
