Ireland is ecstatic after getting a record-breaking 14 Oscar nominations at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Paul Mescal all received nominations for their performances in some of the year’s biggest films.
The Banshees of Inisherin led the green push, with all of its principal characters recognised for their roles in the critically praised film.
The dark comedy received nominations in two categories, not just performance. Its director and writer, Martin McDonagh, was also nominated in two categories.
The smash popular film set in rural Ireland smashed the record for the most nominations for an Irish film at the prestigious event, securing extra honours for its editing and musical score.
Belfast and In the Name of the Father, both of which received seven nominations, had previously set the standard.
The Quiet Girl became the first Irish language feature film to be nominated for an Oscar, making more history for the country.
Tilted An Cailin Ciuin in Irish, the film received an international feature film nomination alongside All Quiet On The Western Front, Argentina, 1985, Close and EO.
Based on the novella Foster by Booker Prize nominee Claire Keegan, the Irish adaptation follows Cait as she is moved from her home in rural Ireland to be with relatives in Ring, County Waterford, an Irish-speaking area, in 1981.
Culture minister Catherine Martin TD called the resounding success a ‘testament to the talent here in Ireland’ and said: ‘We are all so proud to see an original feature film in the Irish language being recognised at the highest level and we hope to see many more Irish language projects following in their footsteps as a result of the national and international success garnered from An Cailín Ciúin.’

Paul Mescal, an Irish actor, received his first nomination for best actor for his work in the coming-of-age play Aftersun.
Aftersun follows the story of Calum and his daughter Sophie, played by newcomer Frankie Corio, on holiday in Turkey while Celia Rowlson-Hall portrays an adult Sophie, who looks back at the holiday 20 years on.
Nell Mescal, sister of Paul wrote on Twitter after the news: ‘(I) am so proud it is making me sick … I would post the video of my reaction but those tears were UGLY’, while the actor himself said: ‘This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun.’
He continued: ‘To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I’m so utterly grateful.
‘I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte and Frankie who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you’
Irish editor Jonathan Redmond was also nominated for his work on Baz Luhrmann’s film Elvis, and Irish animator and visual effects supervisor Richard Baneham was nominated for visual effects in Avatar: The Way of Water.
Members of the public took to social media to express their pride in their nation, with one user tweeting a TikTok video featuring the immensely popular Irish dancing group Cairde.
They joked alongside the footage of the jigging dancers, ‘paul mescal, barry keoghan, kerry condon, and colin farrell at the Oscar’s after party this year [sic]’.
‘Absolutely insane amount of nominations for Irish artists and creatives, we’re fiercely talented aren’t we?’ said another.
While this user commented: ‘I actually can’t quite believe we’re going to be hearing my native language broadcast at the Oscars!!’, in reference to the history-making film as Gaeilge (in Irish).
