Ncuti Gatwa reveals painstaking extremes he had to go to for Barbie movie

Ncuti Gatwa was completely dedicated to the Barbie cause.

The Doctor Who and Sex Education actor plays one of several incarnations of Ken in Greta Gerwig’s big new film, and he went above and beyond to look the part.

In a behind-the-scenes video vignette published on social media by Warner Bros UK, he gave fans a glimpse into the process he had to go through to truly accept the part.

‘Hello, my name is Ncuti, I play Ken and I’m about to get my body waxed – because Ken doesn’t have any hair,’ he explained in the video in a perfectly deadpan tone.

Although he was joking during the waxing preparation, the real process seemed a little different as he yelled in pain.

He was pleased with the findings, though, and joked that it was just what they were hoping for.

‘Wow! It’s like a doll! I like it,’ he said. ‘I feel lighter and more Ken-like.’

admirers were impressed by his effort, and Ncuti is gaining new admirers who weren’t previously introduced to him through his part as Eric in Netflix’s Sex Education.

‘Love the commitment 😂 also, such a great personality! 🖤🖤🖤,’ commented one fan, while another wrote: ‘Suffering for your art. 😂 I didn’t realise until I saw the movie that Ncuti is actually a good dancer.’

They added: ‘He’s definitely got the moves. Very much looking forward to him as the new Doctor Who. 😁’

It sounds like the cast had an absolute blast when they weren’t filming too, as he revealed leading lady Margot Robbie took ‘all the Barbies and all the Kens out in London to see Magic Mike Live’.

‘I don’t know how I made it through any filming in the week after, my voice was gone from screaming so much. The videos in the group chat the next morning were the best,’ he told Rolling Stone UK as he graced the cover of the magazine’s August/September issue.

‘Greta Gerwig’s assistant was pulled up on stage and given a lap dance and Greta was screaming in delight.’
