Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang both wore the same Chloé gown to the Met Gala on Monday night, but in different hues.
The private bash attracts some of the greatest stars in Hollywood and beyond and serves as an annual fundraiser for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty was revealed as this year’s subject, with Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and Penelope Cruz acting as co-chairs alongside the presenter, Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
While some may regard it as the ultimate fashion faux pas to arrive at the biggest night in fashion wearing the same gown as another attendee, actress Olivia, 39, took it in stride and even gave Vogue China editor-in-chief Margaret, 29, a shout-out on social media the next day.
Olivia enthused about their outfits in a side-by-side photo, writing, ‘Great brains. Make it @margaretzhang if you’re going to twin with anyone.’
And that, my friends, is how you convert an embarrassing circumstance into something to be proud of while also helping someone else. Congratulations, Olivia!
Both chose a Grecian-style gown by Chloé, with a cape-like top and side cut-outs.
Fortunately, there were a few distinct differences in how they chose to style their dresses, the most obvious of which was Olivia’s choice of a white dress over Margaret’s choice of a black dress.
Olivia also wore cuffs on her forearms that matched the gold decorations on her gown, whilst Margaret wore a dramatic matching cloak and a longer skirt with embroidery on the hem rather than Olivia’s column-shaped skirt.
Both were inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s 1983 violin dress for the French fashion label, since the subject of this year’s Met Gala was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, an homage to the late designer.
