Paul Mescal has officially stunned us all by disclosing that we’ve been pronouncing his name wrong for years.
After gaining to stardom during the epidemic after playing as main character Connell Waldron in the BBC drama Normal People, the Irish actor, 27, is presently riding high for his critically-acclaimed part in Aftersun, for which he has been nominated for a Bafta and an Oscar.
Based on Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel of the same name, the series followed Connell and his best friend Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) through college.
It was a critical and popular success, and Mescal went on to feature in Olivia Colman’s film The Lost Daughter.
Mescal’s latest film Aftersun has won the Bafta for excellent debut, with novice director Charlotte Wells taking home the major prize.
Despite his meteoric journey from unknown to popular fame, Mescal appears to have much more to teach us.
In a brand new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-nominated actor revealed that we’ve all been getting his name completely wrong.
While discussing whether he would like to start his own footwear brand or launch a line of mezcal tequila, he chose the latter for a very specific reason.
‘I feel like at some point I should look into launching a mezcal tequila line. People get confused with how to pronounce my name because of the drink mezcal.’
He continued: ‘Everybody does it. I pronounce it “Mess-kle”, so I wonder, if I launched a tequila line, I would call it Mescal’s Mezcal. I’m on the fence.’
We’ve had to take a moment to recover as well! So that’s Mess-kle, not mez-kal, everyone.
If Mescal is intending to introduce that tequila brand, we’d want to pour one for everyone who said’mez-kal’ in front of him.
Mescal spoke out earlier this week after a fan reportedly molested him during a recent meeting; the fan was then given a sharp talking to.
He said: ‘She put her hand on my ass. I thought it was an accident but the hand followed. I remember tensing up and feeling just, like, fury.’
‘I turned to her and said: “What’re you doing? Take your hand off my ass”. It was gross and creepy.’
