Sir Rod Stewart appears to be obsessed with the “sausage sizzle.”
For those who are unfamiliar with this meaty Australian classic, a sausage sizzle is a sausage served in a bun that is typically jazzed up with onions, tomato ketchup, or mustard.
While the British may find these stodgy snacks on London street corners, Australians can find them at both voting stations for government elections and the common hardware shop Bunnings.
Sir Rod, 78, has sought out this tasty snack before, as the Maggie Mae singer was also spotted at another Bunnings shop just a week ago, where he picked up some components for his tiny train set.
When questioned about the excursion by 3AW, the performer, who is a train enthusiast, said, “I love Bunnings.”
But, according to one delighted Twitter user, on the I Don’t Want to Talk About It chart-topper’s second excursion to the hardware store, Sir Rod was unhappy to discover that his sausage sizzle was only available on weekends.
They wrote: ‘Rod Stewart spotted at Bunnings in Balgowlah feeling somewhat disappointed to hear that they only do snags in bread on the w/e’.
When the banger sizzle is purchased from Bunnings, all profits go to charity, and its moniker becomes the colloquial ‘Bunnings snag’.
The famous delicacy at voting centres is jokingly referred to as a “democracy sausage”.
To back up his claim to renown, the Tweeter shared a photo of Sir Rod in the shop with three Bunnings employees.
In it, the rockstar can be seen clad entirely in white for his adventures, which he’s been having since finishing the Australian portion of his global tour on April 2.
This comes after the singer became ill and had to postpone his Geelong performance at the last minute earlier this month.
A statement released by promoters announcing the cancellation read: ‘Live Nation and Roundhouse Entertainment regret to announce that tonight’s performance by Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and Jon Stevens at Mt Duneed Estate, Geelong will not go ahead due to illness.’
The Young Turks rocker subsequently disclosed that he had a viral infection that was affecting his speech.
But, worry not, Sir Rod appears to be back to his best on and off stage, pork sizzle or not.
What is a sausage sizzle?
A beef or pork sausage sizzle is an Australian tradition that consists of a beef or pork sausage served in either sliced bread or a hot dog bun with onions and various condiments, typically tomato sauce or mustard.
They are frequently provided at community gatherings and have become a staple at voting stations during government elections, with the food item also known colloquially as a ‘democracy sausage’.
On weekends, they are also available for purchase at the hardware shop Bunnings, where charities and community groups offer the snags to generate funds.
The banger sizzle is also known as a ‘Bunnings snag’.
