Shane MacGowan’s wife has confirmed that The Pogues frontman has been released from the hospital after being hospitalised in June.
Victoria Mary Clarke, who married the 65-year-old Fairytale of New York hitmaker in 2018, has kept fans updated on his condition since he was sent to the hospital five months ago.
Shane’s exact health is unknown, however he did suffer from the uncommon brain illness encephalitis last Christmas.
This is a potentially fatal disorder that causes the brain to enlarge and can result in loss of mobility and difficulties speaking.
Taking to social media, journalist Victoria shared a picture of Shane and wrote: ‘Shane got out of the hospital! We are deeply and eternally grateful to all of the doctors and nurses and staff at St Vincent’s it’s the best ! And special thanks to Tom Creagh and Brian Corscadden for your help.’
Fans flooded social media with thanks for the update, and well wishes for Shane, as one wrote: ‘Thank you for the updates. He’ll be in my thoughts this holiday season xo.’
Another wrote: ‘Victoria Mary, I’m SO happy for both of you & for all of us! I’m in America and Shane getting to be back home is one of the things I’m incredibly grateful for today on Thanksgiving!’
This comes after the 57-year-old earlier this month wrote about her huge worry in an Instagram post, saying she was ‘facing terrifying fears of loss’.
She wrote: ‘Love is the most beautiful and powerful thing that we can experience as humans but love can also feel painful especially if you are afraid of losing a person or anything else that you love.’
In the lengthy post, the Irish journalist continued: ‘Sometimes when you love very deeply you will find yourself facing terrifying fears of loss that can feel so big and devastating that you don’t know how you can survive them and you can’t imagine life without this person that you love.’
Shane was visited by a number of pals while in the hospital, including sound engineer Tom Creagh, who is seen at his side in this most recent photo released by Victoria, in which the Dirty Old Town hitmaker is seen resting in bed wearing a cap and scarf.
Imelda May, an Irish artist, recently visited the vocalist, and Bruce Springsteen paid him a visit back in May, before Shane was hospitalised for his extended stay the following month.
Writing about the Born In The USA rocker’s visit, Victoria wrote online: ‘What an amazing honour and a beautiful experience to get a visit from The Boss!!!’
She added: ‘Such a truly wonderful man and a total genius!’
The Pogues rose to international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s after forming in Kings Cross as Pogue Mahoe – an anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic póg mo thóin, which means ‘kiss my arse’.
Other songs include Dirty Old Town, Sally MacLennane, and If I Should Fall From Grace, in addition to their holiday staple.
Shane was born in 1957 in Kent, England to Irish parents. He will be 66 on December 25th, when, as the words of his famous Christmas song say, “the bells are ringing out for Christmas Day.”
