After topping the Avengers blockbuster, Avatar: The Way of Water has an Infinity War on its hands, as it is now the fifth highest-grossing picture of all time.
After keeping fans waiting for 13 years, filmmaker James Cameron delivered the sequel to his legendary science fiction film a little over a month ago.
In this instalment, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) return as a parent-and-child duo exploring the world of Pandora and facing off against a dangerous old enemy.
The film has continued to climb the box office top 10 list of highest-grossing films of all time as fans go to theatres to witness the epic in all its splendour.
With a remarkable $2.054 billion (£1.66 billion), it has surpassed Avengers: Infinity War, which was released in 2018, to become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.
After this weekend’s results are tabulated, Variety predicts that The Way of Water will move up to number three, surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is now at number four with a worldwide revenue of $2.68 billion (£2.16 billion).
