Fans are outraged that Drew Barrymore feels her classic Scream role may be brought back to the franchise.
She featured as Casey Becker in the 1996 picture, the first character to be haunted by the Ghostface killer onscreen and the receiver of the iconic terrifying phrase – ‘What’s your favourite horror movie?’
With her boyfriend’s life on the line, Casey attempted to overcome the villain’s horror quiz, but her struggle for survival was eventually futile as she became a victim of the masked killer.
Despite her horrible demise, Drew believes the character might be revived for future Scream film.
The performer, 48, told buddy Ross Matthews on her talk programme, The Drew Barrymore programme, that one of the numerous traumas her character endured is identical to a known medical procedure, which may mean Casey survived.
‘It’s funny. I’ve never thought of it this way, but I’m pretty sure a C-section is comparable to what happened to her,’ she said.
‘Like, literally. And I’m here! I’m fine! So, maybe Casey Becker will be okay.’
Fans of the franchise have been astonished and perplexed by her notion, with some wondering if Drew’remembers what happened to her character in Scream’.
One joking posted a picture of Thom Newell as his character Greg Bruckner in Scream VI during his death scene, writing: ‘Thom Newell is teasing his ‘Scream’ character Greg Bruckner may have survived and could potentially return in a sequel: “Sure i got decapitated, but why should I be f***ing fr when Matthew Lillard and Drew Barrymore literally think their characters could come back.”‘
Another fan wondered whether the performer planned to’reappear as a sausage,’ since it was the only way she could’still be around’ after her character’s terrible end.
Others, however, pointed out that just because Casey died doesn’t mean Drew can’t return to the franchise as another character or in a cameo role.
‘What’s so upsetting about the Scream franchise of late is they are shying away from the satire/meta aspects. Casey Becker is DEAD! Doesn’t mean Drew Barrymore can’t cameo as herself,’ one user reasoned.
Scream VI, the sixth installment in the franchise, was released in theatres this year.
A new menace stalks Sam and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, across New York while simultaneously trying to pick off their buddy circle.
Courteney Cox returned as the famous Gale Weathers, while Hayden Panettiere resumed her role as fan favourite Kirby Reed.
Scream VI has been a huge hit with fans, grossing over $100 million at the box office in the United States.
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have yet to announce a prospective sequel, but they revealed to Metro.co.uk ahead of the release that they had already discussed a possible character list.
‘We don’t know what Scream 7 would be yet, but we have a bunch of actors that we would just love to work with,’ Matt told us.
