Ogres gather, Donkey fans take note: it’s time for the fifth installment of the beloved series Shrek.
But it wouldn’t be the same without Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy – who play Shrek, Princess Fiona, and Donkey, respectively – so DreamWorks Animation creative associate Chris Meledandri is bringing them all back.
Although the ensemble has not yet inked any contracts, Chris has stated that talks are progressing well and that the originals are eager to return.
Indeed, Eddie, 62, recently talked about being ready to step back into Donkey’s feet, saying he’d say yes ‘in two seconds’ if requested to be in a sequel or spin-off.
‘We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return,’ Chris said in an interview with Variety.
Chris admitted to being ‘thrilled’ on reading Eddie’s words, as he added: ‘It’s evidence of his strong enthusiasm for a role that he so brilliantly inhabited and really created alongside the artists at DreamWorks. I found that comment to be very exciting.’
Following the release of 2022’s Shrek spin-off feature Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which centred on the franchise’s mischievous feline character, Chris responded, ‘Without a doubt.’
Almost 22 years after Shrek and his crew first appeared in theaters, the series is still as popular as ever, and some people are even seeing the beloved ogre in their ice cream.
In an apparent desperate effort to keep the film alive, one Costa employee created a ‘Shrek Frostino’ blended ice drink, which no one can purchase.
It appears that another episode is in order, just to keep everyone’s heads above water.
People, keep an eye out for Shrek 5, because it’s time to pull back another onion layer of the hilarious legendary favourite.
