Any doubts about the Barbie movie’s vibrancy should be put to bed – the creators went above and beyond.
This extends to the point where their production led to a worldwide shortage of pink paint.
Truthfully, this film continues to give us more reasons to love it.
Greta Gerwig was responsible for transforming Barbie into a living character, with Margot Robbie, 32, embodying the iconic doll and Ryan Gosling, 42, taking on the role of the perfect companion, Ken.
Ahead of the movie’s premiere this summer, Ladybird’s Greta described the importance of making the Barbie Dreamhouse as detailed as possible.
‘Ensuring the “child-likeness” was of utmost importance,’ Gerwig shared with Architectural Digest.
‘I aimed for overwhelmingly bright pinks, and for everything to be on the verge of too much.’
She further mentioned that the intricate details were intended to inspire a wave of nostalgia and encapsulate what ‘made Barbie appeal to me when I was a child.’
In contrast, designer Sarah Greenwood revealed that the production process led to a shortage of Rosco paint in the neon shade.
‘The world ran out of pink’, she admitted.
Sarah also previously stated to IndieWire that ‘pink was the film’s central principle’.
‘Dealing with the painters to get the right colour mix was monumental.
‘Our palette consisted of over a hundred pinks, spanning from purply pinks right to the more subdued millennial pinks.
‘We eventually found the perfect middle ground with about 10 pinks.’
Throughout the procedure, the team assigned consistent names to each shade.
‘We’d been constructing our palette based on Rosco colors.
‘When it was time to order, there wasn’t sufficient pigment! Everyone was frantically searching for more. I’m sure the producers were thinking, “This pink looks very similar to that pink. Why is this a problem?” But we resolved it eventually.’
The Barbie movie, also featuring Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Nicol Coughlan, and Dame Helen Mirren, appears set to be one of 2023’s highest-earning films.
However, if you’re unsure, don’t write it off too soon—the teaser promises plenty of dramatic moments.
The story sees Barbie begin to experience strange happenings in her pink utopia, including waking up with flat feet!
Thus, she sets out into the real world in a quest for answers.
Naturally, chaos follows as a live doll is set loose in Los Angeles, with Ken naturally joining the adventure.
Will Ferrell’s corporate character then sets off on a mission to get the doll back into her box.
The Barbie movie looks like it’s gearing up to be a major hit, complete with high-speed car chases and numerous exciting scenes – and we’re definitely excited.
But there’s also more; expect a catchy soundtrack.
Featuring artists like Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj, Charli XCX, Haim, Ice Spice, and even Ryan Gosling himself, this album is set to be the soundtrack for all your summer get-togethers.
Barbie is slated to hit theatres on July 21, 2023.
