All Quiet on the Western Front is the World War I picture that has caused quite a stir at the Baftas.
The German film has received 14 Bafta nominations, including best film, director, supporting actor, and adapted screenplay.
It is tied with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) for the most nominations for a non-English language film.
All Quiet on the Western Front will be joined in the best film category by playwright Martin McDonagh’s macabre comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, Baz Luhrmann’s excellent biography Elvis, sci-fi adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Todd Field’s Tár, a compelling cancel culture drama.
What is the film about?
When they get on the front lines and are confronted with the grim realities of a conflict that has taken 9.7 million military lives, their feeling of adventure is naturally short-lived.
Although the original novel is classified as fiction, it is based on true events from World War I and the experiences of troops who served in it.
While most war films in the UK focus on the British effort, All Quiet on the Western Front provides a devastating insight into a ‘enemy’ perspective that is generally disregarded.
Who stars in All Quiet on the Western Front?
Felix Kammerer excels as protagonist Paul Bäumer, while Albrecht Schuch shines as Stanislaus, Paul’s wayward but charming sidekick, for which he was nominated for best supporting actor.
Daniel Brühl, who played F1 great Niki Lauda in the film Rush, plays Matthias Erzberger, a Netflix-inserted character based on a real German politician of the same name.
