Season six of Black Mirror is coming to Netflix with a star-studded cast, and we’re not sure we’re ready for it.
The new episodes of Charlie Brooker’s dark anthology series will be available on the platform on June 6, four years after the fifth season began.
Aside from a sufficiently frightening teaser, viewers have been told to ‘expect the unexpected’ in advance of the new series.
Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, Rory Culkin, and Rob Delaney are among the celebrities who have agreed to appear. Salma Hayek, Zazie Beetz, Michael Cera, and Paapa Essiedu are among the cast members.
The official synopsis reads: ‘Expect the unexpected. The long-awaited return of Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology series which reinvents itself with each new episode.
‘The sixth season of Black Mirror is the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet.’
To say that people were ecstatic at the news would be an understatement, as Twitter was immediately filled with topped up postings applauding the comeback.
‘BEST TV SHOW ON NETFLIX IS BACK,’ one screamed.
‘It’s been so long, I’ve literally dreamed about this omg,’ a Twitter user wrote.
‘Oh good I’ve been due an existential breakdown,’ a commenter shared.
Another yelled: ‘IVE NEVER BEEN MORE SCARED AND EXCITED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE [sic].’
Honestly, same.
Charlie, who also serves as writer and executive producer, told Tudum: ‘I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people — and myself — or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself.
‘Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect.
‘Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is.
‘The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through — but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before.’
We’ll be hiding under a pillow till someone needs us…
Season five premiered in June 2019 and included a slew of big stars, including Miley Cyrus, Andrew Scott, Damson Idris, and Antony Mackie.
After four years of silence, the program’s official Twitter account was revived on Tuesday, sending fans into a frenzy.
A new statement on the page simply read: ‘What have we missed?’, raising all sorts of suspicions.
To be honest, quite a bit.
Black Mirror season 6 premieres on Netflix on June 6.
