Josh Hartnett and Kate Mara, actors of Black Mirror, have revealed an alternate death sequence that lead to the shocking conclusion in Beyond The Sea.
The sixth season, starring Salma Hayek and Michael Cera, is now available on Netflix.
In the third installment, Josh joins Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad as astronauts on a ‘dangerous high-tech mission’ set in an alternate 1969.
While completing their duty in orbit, the two may still visit Earth with their families thanks to cutting-edge technology.
However, in classic Charlie Brooker fashion, disaster strikes in a horrible sequence in which Josh’s character David watches the slaughter of his wife and children by opponents of their highly superior mission.
His wife, represented by Auden Thornton, is tied up, and his children are horrified, while David is pummelling and has his robotic double’s arm sliced off, leaving him dripping green gel, at the hands of Rory Culkin’s character Kappa.
While the scenario has disastrous ramifications that affect David’s mind throughout the episode and eventually lead to the shocking finale, Pearl Harbour actor Josh has stated that the sad events that transpired were initially significantly less violent.
When asked about alternative endings of the episode, Kate began: ‘I never even asked that question, but yeah I was definitely surprised by the ending as well, I didn’t see that coming.’
Josh added: ‘Charlie doesn’t rewrite as far as I can tell after production begins.’
‘He’s very decisive about his storytelling I think,’ Kate agreed.
Josh continued: ‘He would say the opposite! He’d say he mulled it over, he said that this was originally a story about a family being killed by a wildfire.
‘He goes through his own process but by the time it comes to production, I don’t think anybody is shifting anything, it’s all there on the page, even the gestures of the characters are written in the script.
‘It’s really spectacular and kind of unlike anything else I’ve worked on.’
Talking about the twisted ending, Josh added: ‘The ending felt simultaneously logical and very surprising, I expected it to go into a different place.’
‘Charlie’s twisted, so he made it even worse somehow,’ he shared.
