Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston might have won up lots of admirers with his stint as Walter White, but he’s called anyone prepared to spend thousands for his pants as ‘crazy’.
From 2008 and 2013, the series portrayed a high school chemistry teacher who turned to a life of crime after being diagnosed with terminal illness, seeking the support of former pupil Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).
By the time it ended, the series had been named the most critically praised TV programme of all time, with 248 nominations for Emmys and Golden Globes, as well as giving rise to the spin-off Better Call Saul.
Last month, one of the show’s most recognisable things, a pair of Walter’s tighty-whities, went up for auction, and while they were expected to sell for roughly $2,000 (£1663), they instead went for a stunning $32,000 (£26,614).
When Bryan, 67, was informed of this revelation, he was naturally taken aback.
When the actor appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the talk show host showed him a snapshot of the auction listing and informed him of the huge sum they had sold for.
‘Oh, I heard about this,’ Bryan said.
While Jimmy claimed that this specific pair had never been worn, Bryan quipped that if they went for more, the’soiled’ ones would fetch a far higher price.
‘I wish I didn’t say that,’ he said.
‘I mean people are crazy,’ he added when reflecting on the huge price they went for.
‘Who in their right mind is buying a pair of tighty-whitey underwear for 30 grand?’.
It turns out, someone who clearly can’t get enough of the show.
While not the same pair, these were worn in the first episode when Walter and Jesse’s RV crashed in the New Mexico desert.
Certain they were about to be caught, Walter stripped down to his jeans and green shirt, standing firearm in hand awaiting the arrival of the authorities, however it turned out to be a fire engine arriving and they got away.
Additional sequences in following seasons also revealed his distinctive clothing piece.
While there’s no rumours of a Breaking Bad return just yet, Bryan and Aaron recently recreated their roles for a Super Bowl promo for American snack Popcorners.
Producing delectable munchies instead of crystal meth, fans liked seeing the couple on film together again, although Bryan noted after bringing them back for El Camino, Better Call Saul and this ad, it was likely the final time they would portray the roles.
‘Each time [we bring the characters back], we think “This is the last time we’re ever gonna do this”, but then Popcorners called and we said we’d do it one more time,’ he told Extra TV.
But, Bryan said that ad may have been the ‘retiring episode’ as the series had a ‘shelf life’.
Breaking Bad is available to stream on Netflix.
