Daniel Radcliffe has spoken out about the planned Harry Potter TV series, and he is sceptical that he will be called to participate.
The actor, 33, rose to prominence as a youngster with Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in the Harry Potter film series, based on JK Rowling‘s books.
Potter has produced spin-off films, a West End play, amusement parks, souvenirs, video games, and a still-thriving, huge following in addition to the film series.
It was recently announced that HBO is developing a TV series based on JK’s renowned books, with Daniel playing the part that made him famous.
Daniel was asked directly in a new interview if he thinks it weird that someone else would be portraying the young wizard more than 20 years after he did.
He doesn’t think it’s surprising since he “always knew the Potter universe was going to keep growing,” but he does think it’s “weird” that there’s a small kid out there whose life is about to change.
‘With the TV show that’s been announced, Potter was always going to be something that carries on and on,’ he told Deadline.
‘It’s way too big a literary phenomenon to stop with the series of films we did. I kind of always knew these things would be happening,’ he added, comparing it tothe likes of Sherlock Holmes, whose story has been reimagined multiple times and played by countless different actors over the years.
Asked if he thought he could make a cameo in the TV series, Dan admitted readily: ‘I don’t think so, no.’
He explained: ‘From everything I’ve read it’s going to be starting fresh, it would be weird for me to pop in.
‘The weird thought I have though is like, there’s probably an eight-year-old kid out there somewhere whose life is going to change in a couple of years. My brain does go there.’
Since finishing his narrative of the kid wizard in 2011, Dan has appeared on the West End, in horrors, and in odd comedies and dramas ranging from Swiss Army Man to Horns and The Woman In Black.
To many, he is still the Hogwarts student, and he acknowledges that he avoids particular London streets to avoid being swarmed by admirers.
‘Sometimes I’m accidentally walking around and I find myself outside the Harry Potter shop …and I think “I should take a block out of the way,”‘ he laughed.
Daniel became a parent for the first time lately when he welcomed a child with partner Erin Darke.
The couple has been together for nearly ten years, having met on the set of Kill Your Darlings in 2012.
