Miss Naomi Carter, a RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestant, has stated that she suffered ligament injury while competing on the famous reality show.
The fifth season of the show premiered last month, with a fresh set of ten queens competing for the title of Next Drag Superstar.
While many have been on stage for years and have lots of expertise, the risk of harm is always present.
Miss Naomi damaged her knee while performing with DeDeLicious on last week’s programme, and she had to finish her group performance while sitting on a pretend sofa as her colleagues danced around her.
While everything appeared to be well after that, she has recently stated that she suffered from severe agony for the remainder of her time in the competition.
‘What you probably didn’t see on the runway; I spent thousands on outfits and I’m in front of RuPaul and this is my big moment so on there I was powering through and walking and it probably didn’t look like I had anything wrong with me… but backstage I was limping and in a lot of pain. It wasn’t nice,’ she told Metro.co.uk.
‘I’m not joking, I was crying because it was so painful and it turned out to be ligament damage in my knee.
‘That was the most challenging part [of the series]. Not only psychically challenging but mentally too and I was getting so frustrated [being limited in what I could do].’
She added that the ‘boob bounce was the worst decision of my life’ and joked she’d be coming for DeDe for her medical bills.
The queen said she’s mostly recovered in the months since she finished filming, but she’s still in agony since she refused to give up her high heels.
‘In reality I shouldn’t be wearing heels but I’m not going to stop. I’ve probably been on my feet too much and not rested it, but it’s got a lot better since filming,’ she said.
Miss Naomi was the second queen sent home on this week’s programme, which aired on Thursday night, after losing a lip sync battle against Cara Melle to Yazz’s The Only Way Is Up.
‘I was actually gutted because I wanted to stay and show more, but the time I had there was so much fun and I had the most amazing time and opportunity,’ she said.
‘As much as I didn’t make it as far as I wanted to, I had a bloody brilliant time.’
When it came time to sashay away, she delivered what some have dubbed the best exit line in the history of the series: ‘See you in a bit, dog s***!’
Miss Naomi stated that her phrase was improvised and that she has yet to observe the responses of the people.
‘I didn’t even think of a line or have one prepared. I got to the end and looked at RuPaul and thought “see you later love”.
‘It literally just means I will see you later my life.
‘Afterwards I was hoping people would understand the term and not think I’d actually called RuPaul dog s***.’
With names like Beyonce (Knowles Carter) and Naomi Campbell, Miss Naomi wonders how her namesakes would react to her performance.
‘I think I’d know how they’d react to the design challenge,’ she said with a nervous expression.
‘If they were to see it, I hope I would do my icons proud though. I’ve looked up to them for years. I hope I am doing them proud.
‘Either that or they’re going to sue me!’
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK continues next Thursday at 9pm on BBC Three.
