Grey’s Anatomy viewers are dissatisfied with how the programme said farewell to actress Ellen Pompeo.
Ellen has portrayed Meredith Grey on the long-running medical drama since its debut season in 2005, and she has appeared in all 19 seasons.
Earlier confessing that she had been attempting to persuade her co-stars that it was time to end the programme, Ellen, 53, announced her departure from the series last year.
While she will continue to do voiceovers and the door remains open for her to return in the future, her farewell episode aired this week.
I’ll Follow the Sun depicted Meredith and her family going to Boston for a new job.
The final words she said were also a homage to her friendship with Cristina (Sandra Oh), who once told her that she was ‘the sun’.
Reading her kids a book, Meredith said: ‘The end of my story is not any kind of ever-after, because I’m still alive, I’m still here, and the sun still rises on my life.’
Although the creators hoped that this climax would bring the beloved character’s narrative to a satisfying close, it was anything but.
Several criticised the way it ended, with some calling it ‘underwhelming’ and another calling it a’s*** show’.
‘All I’m saying is, Meredith Grey did not survive a bomb, drowning, a gunman, a plane crash, a burned down house, a dead husband, a dead sister, two dead parents, a bunch of dead friends, for it to end like THAT,’ one person posted on Twitter.
‘Whoever wrote this farewell Ep for Meredith GREY… I hope your pillow is hot on both sides. This was UNDERWHELMING,’ another wrote.
Some-one else did not hold back: ‘Tonight’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy was genuinely the worst episode of television I’ve ever seen. That wasn’t a farewell, it was a s*** show.’
Several viewers had tissues on hand but were disappointed that the episode did not leave them in tears.
‘I thought I was going to cry a river. What the heck,’ one person posted.
Another added: ‘I didn’t cry. I want a redo.’
Ellen delivered an emotional farewell to viewers last year, most likely around the time she shot her final show.
‘I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith Grey and the show for 19 seasons,’ she wrote.
‘None of it would have been possible without the best fans in the world.’
Other performers that departed the show before Ellen were Sandra Bullock, Katherine Heigl, and Patrick Dempsey, who played her on-screen husband Derek Shepherd.
Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber, played by Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr., are two more original characters that remain on the screen.
Grey’s Anatomy is available to stream on Disney Plus in the UK.
