Dame Prue Leith of The Great British Bake Off has stated that when she travels over the pond, she is’mobbed’ by ‘obsessed’ American fans.
The 83-year-old judge and Paul Hollywood are months away from replacing Matt Lucas in the Bake Off tent with Noel Fieldings and Alison Hammond.
While the celebrity edition, which has included David Schwimmer and Gemma Collins this year, is a tremendous smash to keep us occupied in the meanwhile, Bake Off is no longer only a national treasure.
Indeed, it has spread so far that Dame Prue can’t even walk down the street in America without being accosted by adoring followers.
She said: ‘I can’t walk down the street without them going, “Oh my God, it’s you!”
‘You think they are going to have a heart attack because it is me. They are so over the top.’
Dame Prue continued, speaking on the final night of her UK tour, Prue Leith: Nothing in Moderation, at the London Palladium, according to quotes obtained by The Mirror: ‘The love Bake Off… when we were in LA, they were whooping and hollering.
‘They are obsessed.’
She has previously stated that she does not understand some of the sexual innuendos on the show, whether they are made by fans regarding her jewellery or Paul being cheeky.
She said: ‘I never get the joke. I don’t know whether I am too old. They are like teenage boys, Noel and Paul. Paul will start laughing at the word “sausage”.’
‘I never get it and always put my foot in it. Someone always sees something rude in what I have said.’
Dame Prue has stated that hearing Noel and Paul’s “four-year-old” jokes made her even more thrilled to have another woman join her in the tent.
Talking about Alison’s exciting news, Dame Prue told Metro.co.uk: ‘I think it’ll be fantastic, not only because of her character and her personality, but I like the fact she’s a woman.
‘I love Matt Lucas and I’m sure we’ll be friends for life, but the fact is, when there were three men and me, because there were numbers of them, they just got sillier and sillier and I never understand the jokes.
‘They can go into hysterics about the word sausage. They’re like four years olds. So, I’m looking forward to having a woman around.’
The Great British Bake Off is available to watch on All4.
