When Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) prepared for war, viewers of House of the Dragon season 1 wanted more of the HBO drama straight away.
With season 2 already in production, fans are eager to see what will happen next in the House of Targaryen’s civil war, with Rhaenyra pitted against her erstwhile best friend-turned-stepmother Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).
The fantasy series, which airs on Sky and NOW in the UK, has received an update as to when it will return.
Casey Bloys, HBO and HBO Max’s programming Head, recently revealed the schedule, noting that 2024 is a “fair prediction” for its introduction.
According to Variety, he said that it’s also a ‘good assumption’ that it won’t be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season, as eligibility finishes on May 31, 2024, implying a summer release date.
Now, given that we’re almost three months into 2023, that’s not too much to wait!
Casey also recalled how, when House of the Dragon was in its early phases of development, HBO’s decision to pursue a spin-off programme was ‘historically’ unusual.
‘When we started talking about doing a Thrones prequel that was something that HBO had historically never done,’ he said.
‘I had some people internally saying, “This is crazy. What are you doing?” That said, I think that there’s something about the universe that George [RR Martin] created that lent itself to [spin-offs]. There’s a huge history, a lot of different families, a lot of different wars and battles.’
House of the Dragon took home the Golden Globe for best drama television series this year, while Emma was nominated for best actress.
The SAG Awards are coming up in a few days, and the show is nominated for best performance by a stunt ensemble in a television series.
House of the Dragon is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
