Iain Dale has spoken up about fracturing his hip in a subway station accident in London, and how no one bothered to check on him.
Last month, the presenter underwent hip replacement surgery after tripping at the top of an escalator at Charing Cross Station, resulting in a ‘badly’ shattered hip.
He informed supporters that he was rushed by ambulance to St Thomas’ Hospital and praised doctors and nurses for their’superb’ care.
Iain has now talked about the accident, and how he was left on the floor with a shattered hip as people disregarded him and continued on their way to their trains.
On Friday, the former Conservative Party candidate, 60, appeared on Good Morning Britain with Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway, explaining that he was walking through Charing Cross when he ‘fell flat on my face’ at the top of the gates.
‘I lay there for about a minute and the really worrying thing was not a single person stopped to see if I was okay,’ the LBC presenter revealed.
‘I find that quite shocking, I’m not sure that would happen anywhere else.’
Iain went on to explain that emergency personnel and London Underground personnel arrived to aid and were fantastic, but they had to carry him up a “really small stairway” to get him out to the waiting ambulance.
At the same time, ‘there were still people coming out of the very narrow stairwell to get to Trafalgar Square… people were trying to push past as [ambulance] and London Underground staff were trying to lift me out.’
The hosts, Ben and Kate, were taken aback by the public’s disregard for Iain, even though the broadcaster acknowledged that people have places to be.
Before Kate quipped that people may have seen Iain was a West Ham supporter and abandoned him on the ground as a result, Ben remarked that everyone passing by could have been LBC listeners.
Despite the terrible incident, and the fact that he’s still resting at home following hip replacement surgery, Iain was in fine form during the interview, with the hosts thanking him for being a ray of happiness in the midst of all the awful news in the world.
Dale has featured on programmes such as Newsnight, The Andrew Marr Show, and Jeremy Vine, in addition to LBC and GMB.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
