As PopMaster transfers to Greatest Hits Radio, Ken Bruce will allegedly transform it into a brand new TV gameshow.
The former Radio 2 presenter, 72, departed the BBC station sooner than planned in March and announced that he would be joining Greatest Hits Radio.
His departure from the BBC, particularly from Radio 2, was one of many, as he re-joined old coworkers Simon Mayo and Jackie Brambles at his new home.
But, as sad as it was for viewers to lose Ken for a few weeks, they were even more worried that his exit would mean the end of music quiz show PopMaster.
However, Ken told listeners that he would take it with him to Greatest Hits Radio, and now it appears that he is bringing PopMaster to television.
According to the i, ‘The DJ is in talks to present a TV version of the music challenge,’ after the BBC ‘failed to trademark it’.
The report continues: ‘Negotiations are underway with a leading broadcaster for Bruce to host a television version of PopMaster.’
PopMaster returns to radio on Monday at 10.30 a.m., with two contestants set up to compete – listeners have been assured that the formula will stay the same.
Ken has told the publication that he is “very excited to see where PopMaster can go next,” and that there are “a lot of opportunities out there.”
PopMaster, which debuted in 1998, pits two competitors against each other to test their musical expertise and has since become one of the nation’s best quizzes.
‘One of the requirements of the TV formula is that Ken would be the presenter,’ said Phil Swern, who creates the quiz with Ken. PopMaster and Ken have a lifelong marriage.’
The initial radio form of PopMaster will return to Greatest Hits Radio on Monday morning after an absence of more than a month.
PopMaster has been displaced on Radio 2 by the new quiz Ten to the Top, but fans have grumbled that it is ‘too complicated’ to participate along with at home.
Vernon Kay will take over on Radio 2 after veteran DJ Gary Davies took over for a short period following Ken’s untimely exit.
