During Lorraine Kelly’s interview with Anne Reid, the talk show presenter disclosed the actor’s age, which caused an embarrassing moment.
On Tuesday’s episode of the ITV talk programme, Lorraine spoke with veteran actress Anne about her part in the upcoming drama series The Sixth Commandment.
The programme is based on the terrifying true tale of Peter Farquahar’s murder and attempted murder of Ann Moore-Martin in 2015.
Anne portrays Ann in the BBC drama, the latest in a long series of roles that includes Valerie Barlow in Coronation Street and Jean in Dinnerladies.
Having been in the business since the 1950s, Anne’s age would inevitably come up in discussion, but Lorraine informed the audience that she had pledged not to reveal Anne’s age.
However, she then turned around and uttered it, infuriating those watching from home.
Anne first laid on the self-deprecating humour on herself, joking she ‘looks like a 200-year-old lizard’ as Lorraine insisted she didn’t look her age.
Near the end of the interview, Lorraine said she ‘promised Ann I wouldn’t’ say her age, explaining: ‘I promised you I wouldn’t say what your age was, I promised you and I’m not going to.’
but then went on to add: ‘All I’m going to say is if you play bingo, two fat ladies.’
Even the most inexperienced bingo player will recognise two overweight females as the number 88 – Anne’s age.
Anne didn’t appear to get the joke, and instead of saying anything, she merely gazed at Lorraine calmly, her smile frozen on her face.
Viewers were quick to notice the embarrassing situation, with one writing: If appearances could kill.
‘Not pleased you said her age and why would you?’ they added.
Another shared a gif of a character declaring: ‘You’re despicable,’ as though it were Anne’s reaction to the moment.
And as one put it: ‘Anne Reid didn’t want her age disclosing…. So why does #lorraine do ?? DISCLOSE HER AGE!!!’
Lorraine later doubled down, reading aloud a message from a viewer who dubbed Anne a “national treasure” and couldn’t believe her age.
Lorraine first skimmed past reading Anne’s age, but then exclaimed, ‘She’s 88!’
So much for promises!
