The first trailer for Michael J Fox’s documentary Still has been released, and it depicts the renowned actor reflecting on his blockbuster career and Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
The Apple TV Plus documentary combines documentary, archival, and scripted materials to tell Michael’s incredible narrative in his own words.
It traces the actor’s unlikely climb from a boy living on a Canadian army installation to success in 1980s Hollywood.
Along with his glamorous showbiz career, audiences will get a glimpse inside his never-before-seen private life, including the years following his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis at the age of 29.
The teaser begins with a scene from one of Michael’s most famous characters, Marty McFly, who he played in the Back to the Future film trilogy.
The documentary makers then ask Michael what means to be ‘still’, to which he responds: ‘I wouldn’t know I’ve never been still.’
The film then shows archive material from Michael’s spectacular career, including Teen Wolf and The Secret of My Success, as well as previous interviews with the then-burgeoning celebrity.
‘I get it I was big. I was bigger than bubblegum,’ Michael says following a clip of him accepting an award.
In a voiceover, Michael recalls being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and reveals that he only told his family at the time, including his long-term wife Tracy Pollan, 62.
In the 1990s, doctors diagnosed Michael with early-onset Parkinson’s disease, a condition in which regions of the brain deteriorate over time.
Involuntary shaking, delayed mobility, stiff and inflexible muscles, and memory problems are among the symptoms.
‘To deny that part of me that wants to continue to go on and do things is to quit,’ Michael continues in the trailer.
‘This is who I am,’ Michael states, before calling himself a ‘tough son of b****.’
At the end of the trailer, the director then offers an alternative framing for his story, saying: ‘The sad sack story is: Michael J Fox gets this debilitating disease and it crushes him.’
Smiling, Michael replies: ‘Yeah, that’s boring.’
Michael and Tracy, who have four children – son Sam and daughters Aquinnah, Schuyler, and Esme – recently graced the red carpet for the Still premiere.
Opening up about the secret to their relationship, Michael told People Magazine: ‘Tracy gives our family everything that we need. Any good in our family, anything good that we do, comes from her.’
Tracy agreed: ‘I think we really listen to each other, we are there for each other when we need each other.’
Still: A Michael J Fox Movie will begin streaming on Apple TV+ on May 12.
