Myleene Klass has revealed how Sir Elton John made up with her after he called Hear’Say ‘the ugliest band in the world’.
The I’m A Celebrity South Africa star, 45, was one of the ordinary members of the public chosen by reality series Popstars to form new pop group Hear’Say.
Along with other members Kym Marsh, Danny Foster, Suzanne Shaw, and Noel Sullivan, Myleene achieved two quickfire UK number one singles in 2001.
However, public opinion soon turned against the band, who were forced to split just a year later, citing ‘abuse from the public’ as the main reason.
Among those making snarky comments about Hear’Say at the time was Sir Elton, 76, who called them ‘the ugliest band in the world’.
Myleene revealed that, at the group’s height, they were referred to as ‘the fattest band in pop’ and were pressured to lose weight.
When Myleene later joined the cast of the musical Miss Saigon, she was required to lose weight and use her middle name, Angela.
Myleene stated that Sir Elton sent her an apology bouquet months and years after Hear’Say’s separation, as she began to carve her own path in entertainment.
She explained: ‘I even got sent some flowers from Elton John who said we were the ugliest band in pop. I think he realised he shouldn’t have said that.’
Sir Elton told reporters in the early 2000s that Hear’Say were “the ugliest band [he had] ever seen” and that he felt terrible for them all.
Noel said at the time that Sir Elton reconciled with them during the 2001 Royal Variety Performance, calling his previous statements “immature.”
‘Elton came down to our dressing room and apologised. He said he should never have done it – that was good enough for us.’
Hear’Say singer and Coronation Street actress Kym alleged in 2007 that Sir Elton had also invited bandmate Danny out on a date to apologise.
During the epidemic, Noel told Metro.co.uk that he had to conceal his sexuality while the group was in the limelight.
