Disney Plus has cancelled the National Treasure revival TV series, therefore removing any chance of a Nicolas Cage cameo appearance.
The film series National Treasure: Edge of History, starring Nicolas Cage, was the inspiration for National Treasure: Edge of History.
It starred Lisette Oliveira and was a sequel to the films, following Lisette’s character Jess Valenzuela as she attempts to learn more about her family’s past.
However, it was widely lambasted by reviewers upon its first release over the Christmas season, and it struggled to achieve popularity among its target demographic.
The original films, released in 2004 and 2007, starring the American actor as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a treasure hunter and adventurer caught up in an FBI plot.
The films garnered mixed reviews from reviewers but were well-received by crowds, and fans of the TV series hoped for a cameo appearance by Cage.
However, with the cancellation of the series by Disney Plus, the possibilities of Nicolas appearing as Benjamin Franklin Gates are now nil.
In response, fans have expressed dismay: ‘There never should have been a series without Nicolas Cage in the first place.’
The user continued: ‘You don’t have Indiana Jones without Indiana Jones. Half of the appeal of the franchise is Nicolas Cage going on adventures.’
Another fan complained: ‘How did they come to the conclusion that a National Treasure anything without Nicolas Cage was a good idea?’
However, one admirer disagreed, stating, ‘There’s a reason 15 years passed and Nicolas showed zero desire in returning.’
A return for Cage to the National Treasure franchise is also not out of the question, with a third feature set to be released in 2024.
Although it was disclosed in March 2022 that Nicolas had not yet read a script, producer Jerry Bruckheimer stated months later that a draught had been delivered for approval.
National Treasure is available to stream on Disney Plus.
